What Is Muscimol?
Muscimol is the principal compound found in Amanita muscaria. It is not listed under the federal Controlled Substances Act, which is the reason Amanita muscaria products are lawfully sold across most of the United States.

Muscimol occurs naturally in Amanita muscaria, alongside ibotenic acid. Neither appears on the federal schedules.
That absence is doing all the legal work. A compound that is not scheduled federally is not federally controlled, and products containing it are not automatically unlawful.
Federal silence is not the same as federal approval. The FDA stated in December 2024 that Amanita muscaria is not authorised for use in conventional food, and Louisiana bans muscimol preparations for human consumption outright.
